Neither is universally better — the right choice depends on your order volume, timeline, and how much control you actually need.

What you’re actually trading off

Wholesale buying is faster to start, requires lower minimum order quantities, and shifts quality and supplier-relationship risk onto the wholesaler rather than you. The tradeoff is price — you’re paying for that convenience and risk transfer — and typically less product customization, since you’re buying from existing catalog inventory rather than commissioning a specific production run. Direct factory sourcing gets you better per-unit pricing at volume and full control over specification and customization, but you take on the sourcing risk yourself: supplier vetting, quality control, and the consequences if something goes wrong all sit with you rather than an intermediary.

Where the crossover point actually sits

There’s no fixed volume threshold where direct sourcing automatically wins — it depends on the margin difference for your specific product, how much customization you need, and whether you have (or can access) the vetting and quality-control capability that direct sourcing requires. A buyer ordering small, frequent, varied quantities across many SKUs often does better with wholesale flexibility. A buyer running large, consistent volume on a narrower product range often finds the economics of direct sourcing compelling once volume clears a meaningful threshold.

The middle path most buyers actually end up on

Many buyers don’t choose one model exclusively — they use wholesale sourcing to test a new product or market with lower commitment and risk, then transition to direct factory sourcing once demand is proven and volume justifies the additional coordination. A sourcing partner who can support both stages, rather than only offering one model, lets you make that transition without switching partners entirely once you’re ready to move to direct sourcing.

What direct sourcing actually requires from you

Going direct means taking on real responsibility: vetting the supplier yourself or through a sourcing agent, arranging pre-shipment inspection, and managing the logistics and documentation that a wholesaler would otherwise have already handled. It’s not inherently harder, but it is a different set of responsibilities than buying finished inventory — worth being honest with yourself about before committing to a factory relationship you’re not equipped to manage.

Questions worth asking before you decide

How predictable is your demand for this product? Wholesale suits unpredictable or seasonal demand better, since you’re not committed to a large production run in advance. How much does customization actually matter to your customers? If your product is effectively a commodity from their perspective, wholesale’s lack of customization may not cost you anything meaningful. Do you have, or can you access, the capability to vet a factory and manage quality control? If not, either build that capability, use a sourcing agent who provides it, or stay with wholesale until you do.

None of these questions has a universally correct answer — they depend entirely on your specific business, and the honest answer for one product line in your catalog might point toward wholesale while another points toward direct sourcing.

Whichever model you choose to start with, revisit the decision periodically rather than treating it as permanent — the right model for a product at low volume is not necessarily the right one once that product becomes a significant part of your business.

[5

post-1053","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sourcing-strategy
["GET
