A reefer is a standard-sized shipping container with a built-in refrigeration unit, capable of maintaining a set temperature range throughout transit — typically from deep-freeze to chilled ranges depending on the cargo. Unlike dry containers, it needs continuous power, which means it must stay plugged in at every stage: on the vessel, at port, and during any inland transport.
Different cargo has different ideal transit temperatures — frozen goods typically ship well below freezing, while many fresh produce items ship just above freezing to slow ripening without causing cold damage. Getting this wrong, even slightly, can degrade quality or shorten shelf life on arrival. The correct setting should come from the product's known storage requirements, not a generic default.
For certain fresh produce, some reefers offer controlled atmosphere (CA) technology, which adjusts oxygen and carbon dioxide levels inside the container to slow ripening beyond what temperature control alone achieves. This is particularly relevant for longer voyages carrying fruit or vegetables that would otherwise over-ripen before arrival.
Reefer containers cost meaningfully more than dry containers — both the container rental itself and the ongoing power (electricity) costs during transit and while sitting at port. This needs to be factored into landed cost calculations from the start, not treated as a rounding error against dry freight rates.
Reefer logistics has more moving parts than dry freight, and a single break in the cold chain can be costly. Refrigeration systems inside a reefer do more than cool the air. They also manage airflow and humidity, and in some units, fresh air exchange to remove ethylene gas and carbon dioxide buildup that would otherwise accelerate ripening or spoilage. Loading and unloading needs to happen quickly once the container is opened, since every minute outside a controlled environment works against the cold chain you've already paid for.
Ask directly what happens if a reefer unit fails mid-voyage — whether there's a backup power source, how quickly a technician can reach the vessel, and whether you'll be notified in real time or only after arrival. Not every carrier handles this the same way, and the answer matters far more than the quoted rate once a shipment is actually at sea.
